45 years after ESA listing, the Forest Service seems to think that the Grizzly is recovered in the Northern Rockies. What does the science of bear genetics and population connectivity tell us about what’s happening on the ground?

 

The Flathead-Lolo-Bitterroot Citizen Task, joined by 5 other conservation groups, formally requested “an opportunity to inspect or obtain copies of public records and information that pertain to the issue of hunting grizzly bears and any and all other communications between Department personnel and the Governor’s Grizzly Bear Advisory Council.

(GBAC).” The request was made pursuant to the Montana State Constitution and state law regarded public records.

In July, 1975 grizzly bears were officially designated as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Now, 45 years later, these majestic animals are still struggling to recover, and continue to remain absent from nearly 98 percent of their historic range.

The Missoula-based Flathead-Lolo-Bitterroot Citizen Task Force has sent official notice of their intent to sue the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service over the Soldier-Butler Project in the Ninemile Demographic Connectivity Area (DCA) west of Missoula (PDF).

In these uncertain times we wanted to provide some certainty. We will all get through this together and when we do, the need to protect our wildlife and wildlands will remain vital.

Of course, the arrival of COVID-19 is making a dramatic intervention in our lives. Our plans have changed accordingly. We planned to premier our film The Status of the Grizzly Bear: Has it Really Recovered? on April 2nd. By early March we felt the idea of a public gathering was not essential and we postponed until this Fall.
